GIVING AND RECEIVING OF GIFTS

During this season of the year, there is more giving and receiving of gifts than any other time of year.  In fact, many stores would not earn a profit if were not for the Christmas season.  No doubt, this season of the year has lost its religious significance, and centers today around materialism.  May God help us to remember the reason for the season, and return to rejoicing in the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

If we were to really think about the gifts God has given to us, the season of Thanksgiving would only grow stronger during Christmas.  May we be different from the world.  May we stop going into debt buying things.  May God help us to  give to those who are needy and stop the tradition of “exchanging” gifts.

US GIVING TO EACH OTHER

When we think about giving to others, one of the first things we need to do is review some important principles God gives us about giving which is pleasing in His sight.

1.     In simplicity-Romans 12:8- Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

2.     Without show-Matthew 6:1- Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. 2: Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3: But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

3.     Freely-Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

4.     Willingly-II Corinthians 8:12 For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.

5.     Cheerfully-II Corinthians 9:7  Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

6.     According to ability-Acts 11:29,30 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea: 30: Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul. (Also see Deuteronomy 16:17; Proverbs 11:25; 22:9.)

7.     God blesses those who give in the right way-Matthew 25:34-40

Giving to the Poor

1. Matthew 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

2. Luke 11:41 But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you

3. Isaiah 58:6-11 Is not this the fast that I have chosen?  to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? 7: Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house?  when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? 8: Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward9: Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am.  If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; 10: And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday: 11: And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

4. Acts 20: 35: I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

5. Proverbs 21:13 Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.

6. Proverbs 25:21 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

7. Proverbs 28:27  He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.
